After watching the Karate Kid on Friday night, I asked my son what he thought about the boy winning the tournament. My 4-year-old son looked confused.

“The boy didn’t win,” said my son. “The boy lost. The girl won.”

What?

Oh.

So I tried to explain that Dre was a BOY with long hair who fought the BOY from China and won. My son retorted that the GIRL beat the boy from China. “That was a girl!” my son declared.

Now unfortunately, Jaden Smith’s physique did not help my cause. The kid hasn’t gone through puberty yet. It also doesn’t help that most girls in my son’s preschool class have hair like Jaden Smith’s too. So after about 5 minutes of trying to explain that boys have long hair too, I just gave up.

So go get Karate Kid on DVD where you can see the story of a young girl who gets bullied at school, gets her first girl-girl kiss, and finds a janitor to teach her how to kung-fu her way to victory in a local martial arts tournament!

Girl power?!
