EASTBOUND & DOWN: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON

Special Features

  • Commentary
  • Featurettes
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Outtakes

Eastbound and Down: The Complete First Season
comes to DVD with the power of a thousand John Rockers. It’s not a show for everyone, as I can already see the Danny McBride backlash starting. But, it’s a fun venture that allows Jody Hill and company to provide a playground for McBride to run wild in.

The six episode short season is a little frustrating for conventional sitcom fans. Especially, since it ends on this weird tangent that doesn’t quite provide closure for where McBride was left at the start of the show. Jet-skis, floppy boobs and drugs only go so far. When Hill, McBride and company return for the second season, I’m left wondering where they can go that doesn’t repeat what we’ve seen so far. Maybe, they’ll give him a monkey sidekick or kill him.

TWO LOVERS

Special Features

  • Featurettes
  • Commentary
  • Photo Gallery
  • Deleted Scenes

Two Lovers was the film that finally broke Joaquin Phoenix’s brain. The film is a mature tale from underrated director James Gray, thus marking the third joint venture between Phoenix and the director. It’s a simple tale about a young man who is forced to move back in with his parents. Somehow, he moves to other apartments where he screws Vinessa Shaw and Gwyneth Paltrow. Naturally, it’s a fantasy picture minus any Orcs or Goblins. If you skip it, I won’t be surprised.

PARKER LEWIS CAN’T LOSE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON

Special Features

  • Featurette
  • Episode-Specific Commentaries

The early 90s on
FOX was youth culture central. The kids from West Beverly High held
court, as all other shows were designed to buff the primetime darlings
and offer new venues for the various kid actors that were too ugly for
feature films. Parker Lewis Can’t Lose
was born as a 1990 filler program that could combine the style of
Ferris Bueller with the budget of primetime schlock. This is the show
that introduced America to Corin Nemec and Abraham Benrubi. Plus, it
gave us another venue for Timothy Stack to somehow keep working.

The
DVD release is surprisingly decent when compared to some of Shout
Factory’s other TV on DVD offerings. The featurette is a nice look back
at the show and the people that are still willing to talk about it on
camera. What makes the set are the episode-specific commentaries that
spotlight the showrunners’ vision for this show about a teenager
getting what he wants. The actors that played the Lewis family also get
an episode commentary, but that’s mainly a chance for the gang to pat
themselves on the back. If you ever cared about a show that you haven’t
seen in 15 years, then you’ll want to buy this release.

OBSESSIVE DVD NERDS, I BESEECH YOU!

The Chewer Nation likes to make long-winded lists that can turn even the strongest mind into an Autistic pile of mush. Therefore, I beseech you to make a list for the month of July! I want to see the worst DVDs ever made. List them, provide reasons and do what you will. I know that I can harness your collective mental spark plugs to inspire some modicum of film discussion.

I’ll start.
