THE WEEK OF JUNE 23rd, 2009

WALTZ WITH BASHIR

Special Features

  • Commentary
  • Featurettes
  • Trailer

Waltz with Bashir
comes to Home Video this week. This was one of my favorite films from last year, as we get to see the Foreign market opening animation up to a new plateau. Playing somewhere between documentary and personal reconstruction, we follow as Israeli veterans of the 1982 Lebanon War try to remember what happened.

The flows from the modern day to the early 1980s are seamless and remind one of something resembling dreams. Writer/Director Ari Folman has an eye for visual narrative flow that can’t be denied. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing his next feature soon.

INKHEART

Special Features

  • Featurettes
  • Eliza Bennett Reads Inkheart Passage Not Included in Movie

Inkheart is a decent attempt at making a kids’ movie that attracts the imagination. Sure, it’s based on the moderately popular Cornelia Funke novel. But, kids don’t read anymore. You can try and bring up Harry Potter, but that was a fluke. The film’s a standard good vs. fictional evil, as father and daughter team up to combat the evils that come from literacy.

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC

Special Features

  • Bloopers
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Music Video

Confessions of a Shopaholic is the kind of vapid chick lit to screen translations that are producing a new generation of credit whores. Plastic fantastic femmes and femme males that glorify wealth and the value of an absent God via designer labels. It’s PG, so it’s non-threatening enough to expose to children. But, why would you want to do that? John Goodman and Joan Cusack can go piss up a rope for slumming it in this film. For those of you still paying attention, the film will be released in 1-disc DVD, 2-disc Deluxe Edition and a Blu-Ray release.

OBSESSIVE DVD NERDS, I BESEECH YOU!

The CHUD Sewer is a large place. I’m willing to bet that we’ve all seen
the worst of the worst shit ever dropped onto the Home Video market.
Therefore, I’m asking you to participate in a new project.

I want to see what’s the worst shit to ever be sold to us on DVD, VHS,
Beta, VCD or DIVX. I want to hear your worst experiences with any tape,
disc or whatever. Got a shitty retail experience involving the purchase
of a DVD or a VHS tape…I want to hear it.

Did you ever get suckered into early adoption? Do you still own a
laserdisc player? I want to hear your collective experiences.
Preference will be shown to those that send in videos, but I’m also
looking for good written entries as well.

Post your videos, your links, your essays, your mad ramblings on the CHUD message board.

NEW NOTE: I’m seeing entries that are close to what I’m looking for, yet they seem to skirt away from the Home Theater aspect a little too much. I’m looking for direct home video experiences.

THE PERSONAL CRITERION COLLECTION

I had an idea for a subset column for The Special Edition. Many people
want to have Criterions in their collection. Many people pretend to
like half of the films that Criterion releases. But, what about those
people that honestly can’t be bothered to be told what to like. What
about them?

That’s why I want to test the waters and see if
this floats. I want the readers of CHUD and this dear article to head
to the Boards and nominate their Personal Criterion Collection entry. I
want to see explanations and not just mindless listing of entries,
people.

All titles eligible are previously released DVD/BR media that you believe to be essential/necessary to the collection of the Home Entertainment enthusiast.

LIST DOWN AGAIN THIS WEEK. I WANT BETTER ENTRIES.

HERE’S THE LINK TO NOMINATE MORE TITLES.
