Christ, that sounds awful. When I first head the premise (was it years ago?) I hated it and didn't understand the big online hype for it.
I cannot stand how the home video geek generation continues to look collectively up their own assholes with this referential bullshit. This is not how Star Wars (even though it borrowed all over the place) or Star Trek or any of these sacred geek Torahs were created. Get out there and live in the real world with real experiences. And then you might just have something to write about. (Sorry for the mini-rant. This review and the one for Dead Snow got me all riled up about this shit.)

Kristen Bell's character is fucking awful. She's the Geek Dream Girl as written by someone who doesn't really understand women beyond sitcom ice queens.

Just pure crap. The moment they encountered the Star Trek fans and we're expected to laugh AT the Trekkies but somehow find their banal line references and debates about Boba Fett endearing, I nearly threw the disc out of the window. There's nothing funny in simply referencing things from Star Wars, even Kevin Smith made the effort to DO something with the references, there is nothing in Fanboys that comes close to the Death Star debate in Clerks or Hooper X's Darth Vader speech in Chasing Amy.
Not even Jaime King frolicking in her underwear could salvage this mess. |
