Jumper
d. Doug Liman
c. Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Diane Lane, Jamie Bell, Michael Rooker

  • Digital copy of the film (2-Disc Edition)

  • PIP Jumping Around the World feature (Blu-Ray Exclusive)

Jumper is directed by Doug Liman, the man who kick started the Bourne franchise. That he was not the man who would raise it to the elite status it would achieve is another story. Jumper also stars Hayden Christensen, the actor that millions of Star Wars fanatics hate with all the power of the Force. Jumper tells the story of David Rice (Christensen) who is a Jumper, born with the ability to teleport instantly to any place on Earth. When he discovers others like himself, David finds himself being hunted by a secret organization sworn to destroy all Jumpers. In his positive review of the movie (read it here), Devin said “…if I was a 13, 14 or 15 year old kid this movie would send me out of the theater with a feeling of electricity – I would go home and start writing Jumper adventures or try to make a Jumper role playing game or do any of the horribly nerdy stuff I used to do that kept me from getting laid until I was 18. Not every film has to speak to me as a 35 year old, but Jumper is successful because it made me remember how I was twenty years ago.” Sounds like a solid recommendation to me.

The Grand
d.
Zak Penn
c. David Cross, Shannon Elizabeth, Woody Harrelson, Werner Herzog

  • Commentary by Zak Penn, co-writer Matt Bierman, and actor Michael Karnow
  • Harrelson, Hines, and Romano join Penn for commentaries on their own specific scenes
  • Deleted scenes
  • Alternate ending featuring an entirely different game outcome
  • Profiles allowing the actors to improvise more comedy bits for their characters
  • Trailer

If you ever watched the celebrity poker tournaments on cable TV, you would recognize many of the faces in this improvisational comedy. Taking advantage of the public’s obsession with poker (which is still large, trust me, I work in a casino and it is still as popular as ever), the movie follows six players who reach the final table in a big time poker tournament. It is shot in the same improvisational way as Best in Show but instead of using the same quality of comedians as Christopher Guest did we get Shannon Elizabeth. There are funny people in this movie but as Russ said in his interview (Read it here), it failed because Penn never really reached the levels that Guest did in his films, and the movie suffers due to a lack of commitment to the characters. That’s sad, because I was really looking forward to this one. I’ll still watch it, but my expectations have been lowered greatly. Interesting trivia: The final table was a real poker tournament. The winner was not pre-determined and no one knew which character would win until they finished the game.

The Bucket List
d. Rob Reiner
c. Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman

  • ”Writing A Bucket List”
  • John Mayer Music Video “Say”

  • Interactive Trivia Feature – Fun Facts about Jack, Morgan and the making of “The Bucket List” (BD Exclusive)
  • The Making of John Mayer Music Video “Say” (BD Exclusive)

This is a strange one. The last time I saw Jack Nicholson he was turning in an electric performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Last time I saw Morgan Freeman, he was in a trailer for the schlocky looking Wanted as the head of a group of assassins. Here they are appearing as dying old codgers in a Rob Reiner film. Reiner hasn’t directed a fantastic film this decade, and that is sad coming from the man who used to love the shit out of his output (This is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, Princess Bride, Misery, Stand by Me – this guy used to be great!). The movie shows the two old men as they try to accomplish things on a to-do list before they kick the proverbial bucket. With two great actors and a formerly great filmmaker, I should be interested at the least. I’m not.

The Other Boleyn Girl
d. Justin Chadwick
c. Natalie Portman, Scarlet Johansson, Eric Bana

Now for this week’s entry into movies my wife will make me buy for her, that I have no desire to ever see. She already made me buy her the book, and her favorite movie is Pride and Prejudice, so this should be a no-brainer. The plot involves two sisters, Anne (Portman) and Mary (Johansson), who are driven by their family to seduce King Henry VIII (Bana) in order to advance their position in court. Anyone who knows their history should remember how this one ended.
