You can’t be surprised whenever you wander into a gas station on those places between places where surprisingly people actually live. They are hollow, sad places that oftentimes are home to entire lives that either didn’t realize they could leave or people simply born into conditions that made it impossible to leave. You can’t be surprised, but you can damn sure be repelled.
