As expected, Pain & Gain did not turn out to be everyone’s cup of tea, and yet I don’t think I’ve seen an ill-word anywhere about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The man has three big movies this summer in G.I. Joe, Pain & Gain, and Fast & Furious 6, and it seems as if he’s finally claiming the action superstar crown he’s deserved for nearing a decade.
Well along with a bumpin’ movie career, we can now add (non-wrestling releated) TV star and producer to his accomplishments as he makes a deal with HBO.
We don’t have a title yet, but Johnson will produce and star in a dramatic comedy series about “retired athletes living in Miami.” A lot of ways that can go. The Rock is not the only name attached- frequent HBO producer and Johnson’s Pain & Gain co-star Mark Wahlberg will executive produce, while Peter Berg will direct the pilot. As the “30 For 30” Doc Broke will make clear to you, there’s plenty of drama in the lives of retired athletes, who are, more often than not, living lives as tough as anyone.
HBO has a ton of cool stuff in the hopper, but this just shot to the top of the Fuck Yes List.
