Without particularly enthusiastic buzz from Sundance, Spike Lee’s return-to-Brooklyn film Red Hook Summer didn’t exactly have me hooked based on its “pull your britches up, son” synopsis. I’m happy to say the trailer promises a much more interesting film, and I’m excited to see Spike’s experimentation with more immediate, gritty filmmaking again before he goes all big-budget-reboot on us with Oldboy.
Take a look.
I like the mix of digi-verite filmmaking with the splices of 8mm vignettes, and the dialogue all has a nice ring to it. It will also be fun to look out for Spike’s cameo…
It’s funny how much the iPad sticks out, despite its inclusion being entirely realistic. I think it’s just that using an iPad inherently makes it look like you’re filming an iPad commercial.
The film hits theaters later in the summer on August 10th. You can see the trailer in full HD at Apple, and keep an eye on its Facebook page for theater info.
