In the past when people have tossed around ideas of crossovers between properties like Iron Man, X-Men, Spider-Man, and Daredevil, it’s often come from a lack of realization that Marvel’s film rights were long-ago carved up between studios like Fox and Sony, and that Marvel is only just beginning to have ownership of most of its roster. At that point suggesting Sony would lend their flagship comic character back out to Marvel for a cameo was laughable, but now that Marvel is the one with the billion dollar hit and Sony is busting out with a relatively buzz-less superhero reboot, apparently the tables have turned…

While not a substantive indication that we can expect any cross-studio hero cameos anytime soon, Movies.com is reporting that a mere design-team scheduling issue precluded a negotiated easter egg that would have placed the Oscorp building of Amazing Spider-Man into the New York skyline of The Avengers. While it didn’t ultimately turn out this time, it’s natural enough to assume that it might work out in the future.

Does this mean we’ll see Spiday swinging into the Avengers HQ anytime soon? Unlikely, but with Marvel now the financial flag-bearer for comic book films, you can bet Sony (if not Fox) would be more than happy to play nice with some superhero synergy. High tides rise all boats and all…

Just something to chew on.
