The long history of A Confederacy Of Dunces — specifically the many attempts to bring it to the screen — is so dense that it’s almost a farce all its own, and yet it appears Scott Rudin is again stationed with Paramount and trying to get the picture off the ground.
This time Zach Galifianakis is set to take the lead role as Ignatius J. Reilly, while he’ll be supported by direction from James Bobbin (Flight of the Conchords, The Muppets) behind the camera. The latest script has been fashioned by Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids, Nebraska – the next Payne flick).
If you want the best rundown of this projects sad adaptation history, look no further than this excellent Slate article, which was written when Rudin’s last attempt to make the film was still in play with Will Ferrell. If that alone shows you how much of an accomplishment it will be to finally roll cameras on this fucking movie, nothing will.
And this better not kill Galifianakis. That would be the opposite of cool.
