Now this is the kind of project that’s exciting, but you probably never would have thought of it on your own: a Western, starring Natalie Portman, directed by Lynne Ramsay.

The We Need To Talk About Kevin directo is apparently scarring up plenty of buy excitement at Cannes, where CAA is shopping around her proposed western Jane Got A Gun, based on a black list script by Brian Duffield. Here’s the synopsis from the 2011 Black List:

After her outlaw husband returns home shot with eight bullets and barely alive, Jane reluctantly reaches out to an ex-lover who she hasn’t seen in over ten years to help her defend her farm when the time comes that her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job.

Portman would obviously star as Jane, though how soon she can fit it among all of her high-profile post-pregnancy projects is unclear.

Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin is a brilliant, sculptural film that tackles some very tough ideas. It’s not a film that plays well with everyone, but the skill with which Ramsay can tell a story of quiet pain and unpleasant events while capturing complicated emotions makes me think she’d be well suited to tackling a western. Meanwhile, Portman is just a damn talented actress that has the ability to project vulnerability and strength in equal measure pretty well sewn up.

I hope this one gets rolling fast, as it could well be one of my most anticipated films of whatever year in which it hits my eyeballs.
