These out-of-time alternate universe movies posterss from graphic artist Peter Stults pretty much speak for themselves, and I expect they’ll seep into your social network of choice very soon. What’s great is that there are so many of them, and that they’re pretty consistently well done. There a few clumsy ‘shops (unfortunately The Big Lebowski piece is the worst offender), but the cleverness often saves even those. Besides, I can’t really talk considering my own alternate universe Batman poster from a while back is nothing if not clumsy.
But really it’s the flavor and mix of this set that I enjoy. There’s a macabre appropriateness for casting James Dean in Drive and a something hilariously perfect in the concept of a “3DIMENSION!”Avatar movie starring Bill Shatner, John Wayne, and a bald blue Yul Bryner. Even Leonard Nimoy in Die Hard is delightfully baffling.
EDIT: It’s been pointed out that Stults may have been a little sloppy with his inspiration, as he nabbed some of these casting/director ideas from another (slightly more primitive) set of posters from another artist, Hartter. To be fair, the introduction to Stults’s set even states that he was inspired by other, similar poster that he wanted to try his hand at, but still… it’s definitely not cool to yank the ideas top-to-bottom. So come on guys, if you’re going to be clever, be clever all the way so shit like this doesn’t taint it.
Take a look at them for yourself. Here are some of the ones that caught my eye..
And here’s a bunch more (Ghostbusters and The Fifth Element are must-sees)…
…with a few more at the dude’s profile site. Enjoy, and make sure to let us know your favorites (or good ideas for other out-of-time movies) in the comments.
