2012 has the potential to be a really great year for mainstream and prestige directors alike, and Ben Affleck is a burgeoning directorial voice who seems poised to straddle the line between the two fairly effectively. His exceptionally solid action-thriller The Town was a measured success both financially and critically, though it didn’t quite top $100m domestically or pick up much more than the odd Best Supporting Actor nod for Renner (and the AFI Film Of The Year award), so there’s lots of room to grow. His follow up, Argo, about the unbelievable CIA plot to extract 6 Americans from Iran at the onset of the ’79 Embassy Hostage Crisis using a fake sci-fi movie production as cover, sounds like it could hit that artistically satisfying but widely entertaining sweet-spot once again.

In any event, the film is set for a September 14th release date next year, and we’re getting a very very first look by way of a quick Ben Affleck character shot. Here we see Affleck as Tony Mendez–CIA Technical Operations and master of disguises as well as document forging–who played a very key role in the “Canadian Caper.”

One hopes Affleck hasn’t found it too hard to effectively direct with all that 70s poured over him.

I would expect it to be a while before we get a trailer or anything, but we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on one of the most uniquely exciting films of 2012. Hopefully we’ll get a look at some of the film’s other amazing actors in costume soon.
