There are few creative types in show business right now who I’d rather see with a million bucks in their hand than Louis CK. His recently self-released comedy special “Live At The Beacon Theater” has been out for less than two weeks, and yet it has already made more than a million bucks. This is what the comedian tells Jimmy Fallon on a typically hilarious appearance (seriously, when he describes the charities he supports I almost shit myself). All of these thoughts are elaborated on in a blog post on his website as well.
This is obviously not a stunt that not any random comic or performer could accomplish as successfully, nor will Louie likely be able to do this over and over again. It’s still an awesome demonstration that by keeping things cheap and simple*, you can really cut out all of the middle men. It’s lessons like this that are scaring the studios shitless and increasing the nastiness between Hulu, Netflix, and all the content creators/providers out there.
Louie has done many interviews (including a Reddit Q&A) and has suggested that some profit from this special could go towards financing a movie, were it to make enough. I know I’m willing to chip $5 into that cause and get a hilarious special out of the deal, how about you? If you haven’t yet done so, maybe a little Louie would be a good way of lightening up your Christmas morning?
