John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch is one of my favorite films of the last decade, and I’ve been waiting patiently for his follow-up, Shortbus. The movie is screening here in New York very soon, and while I’m excited to see it, I have to admit that I’m a little nervous to watch it in a room filled with movie critics – see, Shortbus is completely sexually graphic. The film, which covers a multitude of sexual orientations and preferences, pulls no punches. Or penetrations.
There are two trailers for the film now available. First up, and embedded into this page, is the censored trailer. It’s funny, and features lots of Mitchell being his usual charming self. But the one that really lets you understand what the Shortbus ride will be like is completely uncensored and not safe for work, so you’ll have to click here to see it.
I haven’t seen a film that has explicit sexual activity and still manages to be a good movie, and I’m really hoping that Shortbus is the film that will break through as an actual film that just happens to have money shots. The good news for all involved is that the very nature of the movie will guarantee fantastic DVD sales.
Now here’s to hoping I’m not seated next to Joel Siegel at the screening…
