The zombie genre is so tired it’s become tired to talk about how tired they are. So with that I’ll just say the trailer for Paranorman looks kind of adorable, and I love that they had the balls (or lack of complete sound design) to just let footage roll against some Donovan. It’s amazing that despite the marginalization of the format how each new stop-motion film pushes forward the sophistication of its medium as far as, say, each new Pixar film pushes forward animation. That said, I bet it was fun for all these animators that have toiled for years learning techniques to achieve perfect fluid movement of st0p-motion characters to work on the most shuffling, jerky creatures in horror…

Anyway, I look forward to a trailer where we can meet some of these characters and get more of the film’s real vibe, but for now this teaser is a moody, enjoyable first look.

The film features Kodi-Smitt McPhee as Norman, and he’ll be backed by John Goodman, Leslie Mann, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Jeff Garland in a film from Sam Fell (Flushed Away) and Chris Butler. It hits on August 17th of next year.
