*Figures reflect 4-day weekend

Just as the bewildering success of The Da Vinci Code doubtlessly launched another Dan Brown adaptation into development, you can rest assured that the marketing department’s subtitle The Last Stand will be overlooked when the Fox accountants decide whether another X-Men movie is worthwhile. The $120 million opening of Marvel’s many-mutant mishmash broke two records: previous Memorial Day weekend hauls and the most leather-clad superhumans in one film. Sorry, Matrixes.

Things get a little closer to reality next weekend with the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston romcom The Break-Up.
