I’m a bit of a closet costuming enthusiast when it comes to film, but it’s a part of the craft that I know so little about that it’s tough to talk about it much. I’ve let my interest slip out before, but honestly I don’t often express how much more excited I get about period costumes than the latest synthesized superhero pajamas. I just don’t possess the vernacular to comment with any authority. That said, a couple of brief prep shots from the set of Gangster Squad do pique my interest enough to share…

Just look at how fucking wide Josh Brolin’s tie is! I can’t wait to see Nolte’s getup. And naturally Gosling pulls off the trim-cut 40s outfit quite well… he’s had a great looking year, being able to show off in the most expensive outfits possible in Crazy, Stupid, Love, and then of course pulling off the most major fashion statement of the year in Drive. No, I don’t mean the scorpion jacket. I’m referring to…

Coming from WB, I expect this to be the sharpest, and classiest of productions, and I expect we’ll see that reflected in the footage when we see it (as we do in these few costumes now). This is also fun for showing that Gangster Squad has gotten started, as I’m really crossing my fingers that the months of studio enthusiasm suggests they have a great script, and that Ruben Fleischer will be able to live up to his Zombieland directorial promise with this crime thriller.
