Hey there Los Angeles Fright fans! Time for another Friday Night Frights! (like us on Facebook, if you dare!)
August is Clive Barker month at Friday Night Frights, and my sinister cohort Sebastian O’Brien and I are closing things out this Friday at midnight with Mr. Barker’s pièce de ridiculous, Nightbreed.
Here is the lowdown:
Nightbreed is a rare breed indeed, the sort of gleeful, kitchen sink monster movie you just don’t see made nowadays. Directed by Clive Barker and adapted from his own novel “Cabal”, Nightbreed tells the tale of a rock n’ roll rebel (played by brooding, where-is-he-now Craig Sheffer) who may or may not be guilty of a string of brutal murders, and who also happens upon a literal underground society of monsters. Did we mention that David Cronenberg plays his therapist in a deliciously perverse, scene-stealing performance? Hijinx and an onslaught of good old-fashioned latex creature make-ups ensue, and the results are unhinged, dizzying and never, ever dull. The film was Barker’s follow-up to his seminal Hellraiser, but it was sorely neglected at the time of its release in 1990. Now you have a chance to rectify that gross injustice by seeing it as it was meant to be seen — in a dark room full of like-minded, questionable weirdos! Come join us in Midian, where the monsters live!
Dir. Clive Barker, 1990, 35mm, 102 min.
The show is at midnight. For theater info or ticket purchases go here.
And don’t forget to check out our original FNF trailer for Nightbreed!
As always I am giving away some free tickets (each with a +1) as well as a reserved couch for the first place winner. To enter all you need to do is send an email to email@example.com with NIGHTBREED in the subject line and tell me what kind of Nightbreed (ie monster) you would be — in other words, if you could have freaky monster powers, what would your dealio be? Include your full name. I will only be contacting the winners.
Coming soon, Lucky McKee’s The Woman!
