I don’t know that anyone put it past Von Trier to make a porno film like the one he joked about during his disastrous Cannes panel for Melancholia, but who knew it would (kind of) be his very next film?

Coming from ScreenDaily, the news originates from Von Trier’s producing partner who describes Nymphomaniac as a “funny” “dialogue driven” “eight chapter” film that follows “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50.” While this is a narrative film (in the sense that Von Trier ever makes narrative films), it will likely be shot with graphic sexuality that can then be cut into the two versions that Von Trier is apparently planning– one for mainstream art houses, and another for…. whatever places don’t mind showing things going into other things.

I have to say that this project feels sort of… inevitable, and that the quality of this film notwithstanding, it seems like it could end up being a dividing line between different phases of the director’s output. That’s just a vague hunch though.

The film will shoot next summer in whatever country they can find financing, and then will likely take the normal route of his films– build buzz of controversy before release, premiere at Cannes (despite his persona non-grota status bullshit), and move along from there. We’ll keep you abreast of all of it.

Do you need Von Trier waving human parts in your face? I’m interested to hear on twitter, in the comments, or on the boards…

If you’re interested in other Von Trier statements, know that his Nazi ordeal I linked above definitely taught him a lesson. Upon hearing that the Norwegian shooter was inspired by his film Dogville, he expressed unequivocal regret, going so far as to say he regrets even making it.

“It’s horrific. My intention with Dogville was totally opposite. Namely, to ask whether we can accept a protagonist who takes revenge on the entire village. And here I take the absolute distance from revenge. It’s a way to nuance the protagonist and our feelings and perhaps even uncover it, so it just is not black and white.
…You’re asking me if I’m sad for having made this film? Yes, if it has proved to have inspired him, I’m sorry for having made it.”
