The blessed respite from Star Trek may be ending. The franchise, which really appeals to lonely 40 year olds, has been on hiatus since the miserable prequel TV series Enterprise was cancelled, but now the work on the next film has slowly begun. Band of Brothers writer Erik Jendreson has handed in his first draft of a film currently called Star Trek: The Beginning. The movie is set after the events of Enterprise, but before the original series, aka The Only Good Crew.
As much as I hate this franchise, I have to say that Jendreson’s script is sort of intriguing, mostly because it has jettisoned the standard Star Trek structure. “We’re looking at a very small group of men and women, particularly focusing on one character," Jendresen tells Dreamwatch Magazine. "There are a couple of ships, including a principal ship, but this is not a traditional captain and crew of a starship story in the least."
Wouldn’t it be cool to see The Romulan War (which is what the film will probably be about, judging by Jendreson saying that “it would look at the inciting incident that started everything…The story is big and epic, and it isn’t as antiseptic as the television stories had to be.") through the eyes of a Starfleet grunt? To follow a guy as he enters the service and rises through the ranks, being transferred to many ships? Plus something like that would drive Trek fans nuts, since they hate change. It’s why they’re all virgins.
