That worked.

Watching the trailer for Elektra Luxx gives you the incongruous feeling that you’ve just watched a preview for one of those extremely cheesy, DTV sex comedies, except one filled with premium acting talent. The film is a sequel to writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez poorly reviewed independent comedy Women In Trouble (which also reads like an awkwardly unpolished DTV indie), and stars Carla Gugino, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Malin Ackerman, Timothy Olyphant, and even Josh Brolin (kinda- his character’s dead). This new sequel focuses on Carla Gugino’s retired porn star character, where she gets into a beach-novel-esque adventure involving private detectives, twins, and adulterers.

In terms of production value the film itself looks like Hollywood shooting softcore (I mean, look at that fucking poster!), but the acting feels copy and pasted from any bigger budgeted rom-com. Dunno, it’s kind of like Jack White performing a Limp Bizkit song- something just doesn’t add up and it never quite registers in your brain correctly. Even the trailer’s punchline gag is incredibly cliche and obvious, and yet there’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt granting it more charm than it would ever deserve. I’m going to assume Sebastian Gutierrez must be an awesome guy to work with. There’s a potential third film in this trilogy, and it appears that Gutierrez has managed to step up the profile from the first film with Elektra Luxx, so perhaps by Women In Ecstasy (as it would be titled) this shit will be ultra wide-release and A-grade.

In any event, it won’t take too much convincing to get eyeballs onto a film about Carla Gugino and Malin Ackerman as porn stars, so god speed to everyone involved when the March release (of indeterminate size) rolls around. You can check out the trailer below, hosted by TheFilmStage, or you can get approximately 5.52 billion more pixels of exposed Carla Gugino in the HD trailer at Apple.
