It seems that Will Ferrell got a taste for Spanish when he took to the mound during an actual AAA Baseball game last year as the character “Rojo” Johnson, a Venezuelan pitcher (video included below, for funzies), because now Collider is reporting that Ferrell is set to star in a (unrelated) movie shot entirely in Spanish…

This movie is currently called UNTITLED SPANISH COMEDY and stars Will Ferrell, Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries), DIEGO LUNA (The Terminal) and GENESIS RODRIGUEZ (TV’s Entourage & “Dona Barbara”) Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna), shows up with his new fiance, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal)…

According to early reports, the film may be in the over-dramatic style of Mexican telenovelas.

Nothing about this project excites me, thus far. At this point in his career Ferrell is incredibly hit or miss (for me at least). He is still involved with great projects – he brought us Eastbound and Down, though his own two appearances on the show were the worst two episodes of Season 1 – but he’s also involved with a lot of lazy shit. Generally speaking, if Adam McKay’s name doesn’t pop up under the “Directed by” credit, I get less than enthusiastic about the prospects for humor.
