Dreamy!

Yesterday Rian Johnson, brilliant director of Brick and Brothers Bloom, threw up a quick blog that included the picture above, and a brief message.

Shane Carruth is working on Looper.

If you haven’t seen his film Primer, run don’t walk.

This is fantastic news pretty much any way you swing it.

Looper is Rian Johnson’s time-traveling hitman film that we’ve covered as it has added cast and actually started production. Johnson is always communicative via twitter and has kept up the Looper blog with some regularity, sharing small hints and photos from the production. Johnson has long been friends with Shane Carruth, once even tweeting that he “is alive and well and has a mind-blowing sci-fi script. Let’s all pray to the movie-gods that he gets it made soon.” That mind blowing script is surely his A Topiary film, which is Carruth’s reportedly miraculous science fiction piece that has yet to make much visible progress.

Every day that passes without news of progress on Carruth’s next film is a disappointment, but hearing that he’s working on a science fiction film with another incredible young director is a pleasure. We might be left wondering what it is that Carruth is doing on Looper but CHUD alumnus Devin Faraci, now of Badass Digest, got word from Johnson about Carruth’s role in the production and discovered he’ll be applying his considerable visual effects talent to Looper and assisting with the time travel effects.

Devin also rightly calls for someone, anyone out there with the means to back Shane’s second project to do so. There is not a single other unproduced project that I would rather see take shape as quickly as possible as Carruth’s second project. I have an unrestrained and profound appreciation for Primer, and I want more from the mind that shared it with me. I’m crossing my fingers that every little bit of exposure for Shane helps.
