Steve Carell.  Playing an animated bad guy.  Surrounded by a bunch of goofy, Doozer-esque henchgoons.

Put it all together and you’ve got box office gold.

Despicable Me only really had to duel with Toy Story 3 for the title of animated movie of the summer and, while Pixar’s entry clearly won, this was a case where they both made out like bandits.

Universal Studios is looking to keep the coin flowing by releasing their toon on Blu-ray and DVD in time for the holiday gift-buying season that J.C. always intended it to be.

It’ll be available in three versions: Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, and DVD Double Disc Set.  If you threw down some serious bennies on that Sony 3D TV, you can add this to the short list of movies designed to maximize your experience.

Since this is clearly for the kids (and the girlfriends/wives/mothers — hey, I don’t judge), the extra features are less audio commentary (although they do have that, too) and more things like “Super Silly Funny Land,” where the kids from the movie go to a theme park; three, new mini-movies starring the Minions (the little yellow guys on the cover); and video of Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Jason Segal, Russell Brand, Kristin Wiig, and Julie Andrews doing the voices of their characters behind-the-scenes.  The pack also comes with some iPhone/iPad ready apps, and BD-Live for those Interweb-connected players.

And if you’re still on the fence, Uni whipped up this little trailer specifically for the BD/DVD release:

All the versions will be yours to own on December 14th.
