Back in 2009 it was announced that Jonathan Liebesman, director of such classics as Darkness Falls and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, was going to make a film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. That never materialized, but it seemed like Liebesman would still get his Greek on when it was announced this past June that he would helm the sequel no one asked for to Clash of the Titans. Then at Comic-Con, while showing off footage from his upcoming film, Battle: Los Angeles, he confirmed that he would not be directing the sequel. Theeeen… apparently Bros Warner liked what they saw of Battle at Comic-Con, because Heat Vision is reporting that Liebesman has just signed a deal with WB to direct the film after all.
Clash made $491 million worldwide, but few liked it and everyone hated the post-con 3D. Sam Borington has previously proclaimed that he’d make sure the sequel was shot in 3D, but nothing has officially been decided on that front yet. We’re still in the script stage. To that end, WB has assembled a team to collaborate on the script, made up of Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern), Dan Mazeau (The Flash), and David Leslie Johnson (Red Riding Hood).
Liebesman’s film-work has left a lot to be desired (namely quality), but I liked his short Rings, which was a million times better than The Ring 2, and Battle: Los Angeles has got some buzz around it. So maybe he was just warming up. Talent or no, he’s actually in a pretty great position here. It’s not like it will take much effort to poop out something akin to the first film, so all he really has to do is make sure they shoot the sucker in 3D and he’ll be a hero.
