I was hoping that we could have a respite from the Batman 3 rumors until at least after everybody had finished loving on Inception. But no, that just isn’t the way of this world of ours, and so there’s a new rumor sweeping the web. The question: Is Warner Bros buying up Batman-related domain names that tie into Batman 3? The answer: this is beyond unlikely.

io9 reports that Warner Bros has purchased a slew of Batman-oriented URLs, but almost all of them are obviously related to the Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 game. The ones that aren’t obviously related are probably related in ways that we don’t know yet. Here’s the rundown of URLs:

– ArkhamCity.com
– BatmanArkhamCity.com
– BatmanAshesofGotham.com
– BatmanBrokenGround.com
– BatmanNewArkham.com
– BatmanGrandDelusion.com
– BatmanRiseofArkham.com
– BatmanSiegeofGotham.com
– BatmanStateofVillainy.com
– CityofArkham.com
– CloseArkhamCity.com
– PeopleforGotham.com
– StopMayorSharp.com
– WarinGothamCity.com
– WheresBruceWayne.com

Some of these URLs will never be used; they’re just getting bought by marketing just in case, or to stop squatting. The reality is that there is no way that Warner Bros marketing is starting work on any sort of Batman 3 related viral campaign, as io9 weirdly hypothesizes. Why would io9 hypothesize this? Well, the Gawker Media model has bloggers getting paid by hits.

While it’s likely that there is a draft of Batman 3 that exists right now, there’s simply no way that the marketing team is in on it at this date. They will see the script and be privy to info in advance, but getting started on a campaign for a movie that isn’t even in pre-production would probably be unprecedented in the world of big blockbuster marketing.
