  • A Single Man was one of the most beautiful films I saw last year. Taken from the original novel by Isherwood, director Tom Ford delivers an impressive feature debut. First-time Oscar nominee Colin Firth delivers an incredible performance as Professor George Falconer. George has just lost the love of his life, but he can’t share his grief openly. He’s a gay man in early 60s America and no one seems willing to understand what/who he is. Finding safety in the arms of his friend Charley. Playing with color, memory and social convention; Ford helps to takes Isherwood’s story into a new realm. I highly recommend that everyone at CHUD gives it a rental.

Squidbillies is one of the best animated shows airing right now. No one quite captures that true mystery of the Deep South like a bunch of squids achin’ to get back to Gatlinburg. The latest volume sports episodes ranging from the dangers of steroids to bitches to the gays. Earlie Cuyler represents everything that anyone from the Southeastern United States has fought to eradicate from the popular landscapes. Well, the self-aware members of the South. Everyone else ignores it or they partake of meth. The DVD also comes with some Dragon Con 2009 footage and a look at the music and artwork for the series.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was the highest grossing film in Denmark ever. Sure, it’s an adaptation of an insanely popular book series. David Fincher is supposed to be working on American version of the film. Basically, it’s a better written Dan Brown style adventures about a weird family and a gruesome murder. A disgraced reporter and a hacker team up to crack the case, but they only discover more dead bodies tied to the strange Vanger family. Working against all hope, they try to find out why the Vangers always seem to be covering up strange deaths. If you’re a fan of the book, you’ll enjoy the adaptation. All others might want to try and rent first.

    Brooklyn’s Finest is
a strong enough crime drama.  Don Cheadle, Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke struggle to break out of that Training Day shadow that looms over the film. If anything, it feels like Mike Newell trying to ape Sidney Lumet. Wesley Snipes shows up and he’s just there to bring some sort of ethnic edge to the events. I’m sorry, but I can’t buy Passenger 57 as a tough guy anymore. Still, it’s a nice effort that deserves a second look on Home Video. Richard Gere carries a lot of the film based on his ability to actually portray a realistic cop who’s divided between what he should do and what he wants to do. Director Antoine Fuqua feels like he’s so close to making a truly great movie. He just needs to shake off these outside influences and make an original film.
