The teaser trailer for Marmaduke has plenty of issues with it- once again they’re trying to bring back an old-fashioned property by making the subject matter appear cooler than school through the cunning use of hip hop and sunglasses- but the most bizarre is the decision to have Marmaduke talk.

When it was announced last month that Owen Wilson would provide the voice for the (non-talking) comic strip dog I sorta assumed that he would be voicing his subconscious. But no, we’ve got this big doofy dog talking about his poor dog problems while he moves from Kansas to California, where I’m sure he tries hard to fit in with all those cool city dogs.

Still, there can’t be that many Marmaduke purists left, right? Check out the teaser trailer and decide if it rapes the memory of the weirdly popular comic for yourself-

Despite how absolutely terrible that trailer makes the film look already there’s one big thing that might make me sit through this tripe- Steve Coogan‘s voicing a dog. Other dogs include George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, Damon Wayans, Marlon Wayans and Fergie. (Aren’t you proud of me for holding off on the obvious joke there?) Humans appearing will be Judy Greer, William H. Macy, and Lee Pace.

Marmaduke hits June 2010.

Wonder if the person you’re chatting about Kurosawa with is actually a dog on our messageboards.
