Overture Films (The Men Who Stare at Goats, The Crazies) announced today that they’ve grabbed US distribution rights to Stone– which sadly has no relation to the awesome Aussie biker film. No, this Stone‘s about an arsonist (played by Edward Norton) who manipulates his parole officer (Robert De Niro) by throwing his wife (Milla Jovovich) at him. Frances Conroy also stars, presumably as De Niro’s spouse.
One can only hope that Norton is going back to evil territory here, because the man sure knows how to play an bad guy. It’s also great to see him reteaming with De Niro after the disappointment that was The Score. There was a line from an interview with Norton talking about his role in that film that always stuck with me. I’m paraphrasing here, but it was something like “I would have taken this job to work with Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando if it was just a reading of the phone book.”
Of course, the film ended up being little more entertaining than that, and De Niro hasn’t had a great role this entire decade besides Stardust (yeah, you heard me) so we shall see what they can do with this.
Expect Stone to hit next year.
Talk about how great the 1974 Stone is on our messageboards.
