THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 8th, 2009

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

(Three-Disc Special Edition)
d. David Yates
Warner Brothers

Special Features

  • Digital Copy
  • Featurettes
  • Additional Scenes
  • Bonus Footage of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows
  • Maximum Movie Mode w/ special December 12th screening

The boy that lived returns for another installment. Warner Brothers is getting toward the end of the road with their golden goose. Still, it’s been a fun ride. WB hops on the Blu-Ray combo pack bandwagon and is offering up a Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Copy combo pack that will retail for around twenty dollars. It’s quite a deal and it can help a lot of families to future proof their collections. Plus, WB is also going to have a special screening for Blu-Ray owners via BD-Live. Taking place on Saturday the 12th, Daniel Radcliffe and the director will take questions from the e-audience. If you’ve participated in the past with WB’s bows for Watchmen and Terminator: Salvation, it’s quite similar.

LOST: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON
c. Matthew Fox, Michael Emerson, Terry O’ Quinn, Elizabeth Mitchell, the fat guy, the Asians and the Man in Black.

Special Features

Deleted Scenes
Commentaries
Featurettes
Bloopers

Blu-ray Exclusive Features

  • Lost University – Where Autism goes to die.

It’s almost over. Nearly six years of listening to your office co-workers and friends talk about the true nature of The Island. Then, there was Season 2 and the death of the average viewer’s fascination. Michael Emerson showed up and got a few viewers back, then they forced the freighter shit on us during the Writers’ Strike. Time travel is the name of the game this season and it worked well. That’s why I’m leaning towards Mirror, Mirror Universe versions of the cast for Season 6.

PUBLIC ENEMIES
d. Michael Mann
c. Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, Billy Crudup and others

Special Features

  • Commentary
  • Featurettes
  • Digital Copy
  • U-Control Interaction
  • Pocket Blu I-Phone App

Michael Mann is such a complicated director to follow. Taking more chances than his contemporaries, you see Mann stretch and try to develop a new approach to his old routine. John Dillinger is the target in the latest Mann crime drama. Naturally, Mann experimented a little too much in terms of visual and score. Give it a decade or so for the inevitable re-edit. Outside of that, I don’t have anything too terrible to say about the film. Johnny Depp runs circles around Christian Bale, while a litany of actors in smaller roles get too little screentime. Claire from Lost is in the flick too. Although, it’s only for two minutes toward the start of the film.

WORLD’S GREATEST DAD
d. Bobcat Goldthwait
c. Robin Williams, Daryl Sabara and Alexie Gilmore

Special Features

• Music Video
• Deleted Scenes
• Featurettes
• Commentary
• Trailer

Robin Williams is still talented. Trust me, I’m amazed that the man still has a shred of humor in his body. A lot of people claim that it is due to Williams’ inability to pick quality material. Others say that he relies too much on older material and shit that sold tickets in 1992. When Williams shares a scene with Daryl Sabara in this film, we find what is missing. Williams is slipping into the older cinematic comedian role. He needs someone to play off, someone to build timing and delivery. The duo develops such a natural rapport that it continues when the two don’t share a scene together. I’m worried about spoiling the film, so I’ll stop here. Just pick it up. Fuck everything else this week. Just pick this movie up.

NETFLIX INSTANT VIEW (POURING THE DIRT INTO BLOCKBUSTER’S GRAVE)

New movies to watch instantly
New TV to watch instantly

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ADDING NETFLIX TO THE HOME VIDEO COVERAGE?

Netflix Instant View and various Video on Demand services are changing the way that we view our home entertainment. As I spotlighted last week, Netflix Instant View had a handful of Universal titles available online before their retail bows. I’m willing to bet that the readership also noticed this.

Given the game console base for the Instant View service and the various folk who only view entertainment online, I feel that we’re missing out on something. Therefore, I propose adding a Netflix/Hulu/Google Video section for new home entertainment additions.

What have been your experiences with these services in the past? How often do you find yourself checking out Instant View before hitting the video store? I’m going to toy around with this for the next few weeks. If it seems viable and something that you’re interested in, I’ll have the sub-section ready to go by the first week of January 2010.

COMING SOON TO YOUR HOME THEATER

  1. Facing Ali arriving
on DVD from Lionsgate on December 29th.

Three-time World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali defeated almost every top
fighter of the golden age of boxing. Now, through the untold stories of his
opponents in the fights that defined him, experience “The Champ” like never
before.  Facing Ali
turns the cameras on some of Ali’s biggest rivals including George Chuvalo, Sir
Henry Cooper, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Ron Lyle, Ken Norton,
Earnie Shavers, Leon Spinks and Ernie Terrell providing a fresh and impactful
perspective on the famed boxer, the sport, talent and courage.

Critics
have declared Facing
Ali
a winner, stating about the film, “One of the year’s best and most inspiring
documentaries.  Once it starts punching, it doesn’t stop – just like
Ali.
” (artistdirect.com), “pays great
homage to Mr. Ali
” (Plume Noire) and “offers a compelling format to a well-chronicled story
of an iconic figure
” (Sportsandcinema.com).  The DVD contains knockout
bonus materials including animated trivia cards for each of the boxers, three
featurettes – looking at the fighters and their experiences with Ali, the making
of the film and the unique way this book was adapted for the screen as well as
the process used to restore and upgrade the archival fight footage to HD
quality.
