Oren Peli, director of the breakout smash (possibly of the decade) Paranormal Activity, has been filming his follow-up, Area 51, independently. The gimmick is the same as Paranormal but this time it’s aliens instead of demons plaguing people with too much battery power on their camcorders.

Now Paramount has stepped up to buy the film, which had been looking for distributors. Peli brought the movie in for just under 5 million bucks, and he finished filming a couple of weeks ago. And apparently while he was deal making with Paramount he came to some kind of understanding about Paranormal Activity 2, which Variety says is the next deal Peli is making with the studio.
