When news hit earlier this year about the remake of the Coen Bros’ debut Blood Simple, we all wondered what director Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) could possibly do with such a gritty noir film, what sort of film he would turn it into.
Now that the trailer for the film (now titled Amazing Tales: Three Guns) is here we can see the obvious answer- make it a thriller/comedy set in feudal China.
Yeah, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any reference point to the original film. It does look utterly fantastic and weird, however, and Yimou is such a great director that it automatically warrants a watch. The film will apparently be split into two separate parts, one while is comedy and one which is straight-up thriller. Very interesting stuff. The film opens in China next month but we won’t get it in the States till next year.
