The Office: Season 5  is a weird blend of what works and what doesn’t. Taking cues from the past seasons, Stephen Merchant and the willingness to suck hard at the Must-See TV teat, Greg Daniels has helped to craft something bizarre. This walking behemoth of too dumb to function, yet too interesting to look away. A lot of people have made a big deal out of Idris Elba being added to the show mid-season. Honestly, it breaks up the flow of the season opening and kills momentum for about 5-6 episodes. Where Stringer Bell helped The Wire, he drags Dunder/Mifflin into a stand-still of middlin’ plot.

Fringe: The Complete First Season reminds me of the need to watch some shows only on DVD. What seemed way too long and convoluted on a weekly basis comes together nicely when viewed as a collected serial. Dr. Walter Bishop’s debut marks the return of the Mad Scientist archetype to modern television. How I love watching men of science mangle the natural order in order to create a better monster. The DVD is loaded, but the Blu-Ray breaks down the connection between The Pattern, the ZFT and the Fringe Unit a lot better.
