Did you know that Lorne Michaels had nothing to do with the best Saturday Night Live-related movie, The Blue Brothers? However he did produce A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar and The Ladies’ Man!
I only bring this up due to my deep, deep trepidation about Michaels getting back into the ‘Movie Based on a Skit’ game with MacGruber. I quite liked him producing original movies from SNL talent – Hot Rod is brilliant, as is Mean Girls – but the skit movie thing? And with MacGruber of all the skits?
That said, Bill Hader has gone on the record saying that the script is hilarious and pushes the bounds of an R-rating. Here’s what he said to NY Mag’s Vulture in August:
I read the script, and it’s like a hard-R comedy, and it totally works.
It’s hilarious. It’s kind of in the vein of, like, eighties action
movies, like there’s a very definitive bad guy. I don’t know if I can
talk about the plot too much, but it’s hilarious. The thing that kind
of blew my mind about it is that it’s like a HARD-R movie. I was like,
“What is this? This is fucking ugly. You guys are really going to do
this?” And they’re like, “Yup.” And I was like, “That is awesome. That
is fucking hilarious.”
I really like Bill, and I really trust his opinion on what’s funny, so him saying this goes a long way towards assuaging my fears.
Oh yeah, that picture up top? That’s a Just Jared spy photo from the set of Will Forte and Kristen Wiig in character, found via Collider.
