THE WEEK OF JULY 14th, 2009

MAD MEN: SEASON TWO

Special Features

  • Commentaries
  • Featurettes
  • Historical Timelines

Mad Men: Season 2 comes to DVD with an amazing release that carries on the grand tradition of showing how much ass Jon Hamm kicks. The world needs more Don Draper, but Draper takes a bit of a sidecar to Peggy’s self-discovery. Excellent character moments abound, while you get a superb guest-spot from Colin Hanks.

The
DVD offers up expert commentaries from the cast, some creative talent and series creator Matthew Weiner. We get glimpses into time period and we see how the fashions of 1962 came to life onscreen. It’s amazing to see AMC step-up their game and actually surpass HBO in some respects. If you’re not watching this show, then take this as your second chance to play catch-up.

THE STATE – THE COMPLETE SERIES

Special Features

  • Featurettes
  • Commentary
  • Interviews
  • Outtakes
  • Promos
  • Retrospectives

The State is one of those shows that MTV seems to have forgotten how to make. Well, they didn’t really make it. They just gave it a shitty timeslot and the world fought to discover the magic of Louie and his balls. Some musical cues have been changed, but it’s nothing major. What’s going to surprise a lot of long-time fans is the short length of the seasons. Each of the four seasons fits on its own DVD. Plus, there’s a fifth disc that’s loaded with left-over featurettes that show off how the show was born and died.

GREY GARDENS (2009)

Special Features

  • Commentary
  • Featurette

Did you ever see the classic Maysles Brothers’ documentary that spotlighted the secluded Big and Little Edie Bouvier Beale? Well, this is an attempted recreation of what the Beales were like, while mixing a lot of dramatic speculation into the mix to keep things lively. Jessica Lange wows audiences, while Drew Barrymore desperately holds on for screen time and attention. It’s not a bad film, it’s just extremely flawed.

OBSESSIVE DVD NERDS, I BESEECH YOU!

The
Chewer Nation likes to make long-winded lists that can turn even the
strongest mind into an Autistic pile of mush. Therefore, I beseech you
to make a list for the month of July! I want to see the worst DVDs ever
made. List them, provide reasons and do what you will. I know that I
can harness your collective mental spark plugs to inspire some modicum
of film discussion.

I’ll start.

1) Colossus: The Forbin Project
2) The Enforcer – Dragon Dynasty  (via Reggie-Wanker)
3) Superman II – The Richard Donner Cut  (via Hammerhead)

I keep my library pretty lean, but the worst title on my shelf is probably Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut.
Although it’s great to see some of the unreleased footage, the
assemblage is cheap and amateurish (indeed, I’ve seen amateur
reconstructions that are far better). And the final product makes no
narrative sense as either a sequel or a standalone film.

The making-of goes into almost no detail at all about the production’s
complex history (if ever I wanted a warts-and-all doc, this would be
it), and the commentary by the original director and screenwriter
betrays the fact that they had virtually nothing to do with creating
the new version. As close to a blatant cash-grab as these things get.

Post your videos, your links, your essays, your mad ramblings on the CHUD message board.
