THE WEEK OF APRIL 21st, 2009

THE WRESTLER

Special Features

  • Featurettes
  • Music Video

The  Wrestler
was the best film of 2008. Don’t argue with me. Just accept the rebirth of one of the best male actors in recent memory. If you didn’t get to see the film during its theatrical run, it comes to Home Video on a rather limp DVD and BLU-RAY. Why Darren Aronofosky wasn’t available to record a commentary is beyond me. But, you get a Bruce Springstreen music video. Not quite a fair trade.

FROST/NIXON

Special Features

  • Featurettes
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Commentary

Frost/Nixon proves that Ron Howard can’t catch a break. When the man tries to break out of his comfort zones, nobody sees his movies. But, if he makes a syrupy lie of a biopic such as A Beautiful Mind…he gets an Oscar. Frank Langella, Michael Sheen and Sam Rockwell are firing on all cylinders in this flick. Give it a shot on video, if you missed the theatrical bow.

CAPRICA

Special Features

  • Featurettes
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Commentary

Caprica
is a film that could make anyone a fan of Battlestar Galactica. Taking a step back from the space opera of the main show, we get to see what led to the Battlestar’s quest for Earth. Specifically, the development of the show’s main villains. Watching the painful origins of the Cylon and what would lead them to attack humanity was quite an ordeal to watch. But, it was enough to get me to revisit the series and rethink my appreciation of it. Strong stuff here and a recommended buy.

THE PERSONAL CRITERION COLLECTION

I had an idea for a subset column for The Special Edition. Many people
want to have Criterions in their collection. Many people pretend to
like half of the films that Criterion releases. But, what about those
people that honestly can’t be bothered to be told what to like. What
about them?

That’s why I want to test the waters and see if
this floats. I want the readers of CHUD and this dear article to head
to the Boards and nominate their Personal Criterion Collection entry. I
want to see explanations and not just mindless listing of entries,
people.

All titles eligible are previously released DVD/BR media that you believe to be essential/necessary to the collection of the Home Entertainment enthusiast.

John Ford directs an amazing tale of the American West. Davy Brandon has been tasked with the creation of the Union Pacific Railroad. His new task places him against the Indian nation of the opening West. Together with two friends, Brandon takes the Indian hordes.

The current DVD from 20th Century Fox comes out of their recent Ford at Fox megaset. The Iron Horse was a touchstone for Ford’s career and influenced several of his later films. You get two cuts of the film on DVD (American and International Cuts). There’s featurettes about the restoration of the 75 year old film and the various issues surrounding its score. If you pick it up as part of the Ford at Fox Collection, you also get a replica of the original 1924 program.
