THE WEEK OF MARCH 17th, 2009

MR. BELVEDERE: SEASONS 1 AND 2

Special Features:

  • Featurette
  • SNL sketch

Mr. Belvedere
was the show that brought America together on the nights that Night Court didn’t air. In this series, a suave Butler from England came to Pittsburgh to make his way into the American commoner’s heart. He taught us of love, respect and admiration for ballet. Then, he watched over us during life’s very special episodes. When Wesley’s friend got AIDS, Belvedere was there. When Bob Uecker went on strike, Belvedere was there. When you were on the beach and you saw only one set of footprints, Belvedere was there.

PUNISHER: WAR ZONE

Special Features:

  • Commentary
  • Featurettes
  • Trailer

Punisher: War Zone was supposed to be many things. What it became was an imaginative take on the Ennis era Punisher, but beset by the failures of the new action movie trends. That’s not to say that it doesn’t owe a thing or two to the Bronson era Cannon Films. It’s just that any movie that slams Parkour with such panache deserves some appreciation. The film is being released in several editions. But, I recommend the Blu Ray disc. The A/V Quality is damn near reference material.

AFRO NINJA: DESTINY

Special Features:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Featurette
  • Interviews

Afro Ninja: Destiny
suffers
from what most of the Youtube sensations suffer. When taking a five-minute and trying to stretch it to 90 minutes, you’re beset by failure. Trying to slap a story on what was once a great sight gag is terrible and leaves one wondering about the intent of creating a film. Then, you realize that there’s probably some poor bastard behind this offering that hopes for a shot of legitimacy. Legitimacy doesn’t come to fake ninjas.

I’VE GOT AN IDEA FOR A SUBSET OF THE SPECIAL EDITION

I’ve got an idea for a subset column for The Special Edition. Many people want to have Criterions in their collection. Many people pretend to like half of the films that Criterion releases. But, what about those people that honestly can’t be bothered to be told what to like. What about them?

That’s why I want to test the waters and see if this floats. I want the readers of CHUD and this dear article to head to the Boards and nominate their Personal Criterion Collection entry. I want to see explanations and not just mindless listing of entries, people.

All titles eligible are previously released DVD/BR media that you believe to be essential/necessary to the collection of the Home Entertainment enthusiast.

HERE’S THE LINK TO NOMINATE.
