Miracle at St. Anna is a rare kind of film. A Spike Lee joint that showed the man growing outside of the boundaries in which he became trapped. Sure, there was the success of Inside Man and the polarizing racial polemics of Bamboozled. But, this film manages to strike upon gold. A World War II story that shows the emotion of minority soldiers in a foreign land, as they try to make sense of an incident that’s alien to them. The DVD is rather featureless, but you get some decent EPK material that tries to put the film into a historical context.

Frozen River pulled that neat hat trick where the smallest indie flick gets Oscar recognition.Sure, it was just a handful of nomination. But, that’s better than most small-time debuts ever receive. The whole film is rather genius. A middle-aged woman is confounded by the current housing bullshit. So, she teams up with an Indian woman to smuggle illegals across the border and onto an Indian reservation. It makes for an interesting viewing and one that I look forward to discussing with more people. So, go out there and pick this up.
