Man, I just wrote this whole story and then the back end of CHUD ate it the fuck up. So here’s a shortened version, bereft of my usual wit, charm and wittily charming wordplay:

Don Murphy tells Shock Til You Drop that John Stevenson, director of the CGI hit Kung Fu Panda, has come aboard to direct the adaptation of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s We3. The comic miniseries follows a dog, cat and rabbit that have been melded with high tech and deadly battle suits by the US military. When they escape, their story becomes funny, touching, tragic and ultra, ultraviolent. Morrison himself has written the screenplay.

The only problem is that the film was set up at New Line, so Murphy is now looking for a new home for his cybernetic deathpets.

Says Don: “We’re doing it as an R-rating. It’s not going to be cutesy. There’s killer rabbits and stuff. We’re in the process right now of trying to figure out where we’re going to make it.”

I’ve talked to Don about this film extensively – he’s been looking for a director for a long, long time – and I think that this project is in as good a place as it can be. After all, it’s a bloodspattered story about killer housepets, and he’s dedicated to making it true to Morrison and Quitely’s vision as opposed to doing a PG-13 Milo & Otis.
