I’m an enormous supporter of Laika. Between Coraline and ParaNorman (I have yet to see The Boxtrolls), they have proven that stop-motion animation (assisted by some stylishly appropriate CG) is still an immensely viable and unique art-form. They’ve done a great job in the past, but this trailer for their fantasy adventure Kubo and the Two Strings has left my jaw on the floor.

This looks astounding. Unbelievably gorgeous, awe-inspiring, and just pure cool. The character designs (Rooney Mara’s villain is dope), the atmosphere, the adventure, the beautiful landscapes. This just shot way, way up on my list of most anticipated movies for next year.

I really hope the story and characters live up to this trailer (my experience with Laika so far leaves me believing they will), because it’s quite possible Kubo and the Two Strings could end up being one of my favorite movies of 2016. I’m going to go watch this trailer twelve more times now.
