A Sneak Peek at the Next “Futurama” Epic, Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder

Futurama returns with its third straight-to-DVD feature. It’s been an interesting experience, but it seems a little like a slap in the face. If you make a quotable dumb show that stoners and frat boys enjoy, you get to come back. But, if you aim higher with better story-telling than The Simpsons, you get fucked. This adventure finds Bender worrying about his lack of imagination. He gets involved in a game of Dungeons & Dragons that eventually leads to the main plot.

Mom of Mom’s Robotics is kidnapping the Nibbolonians and using them for a fecal fuel farm. It’s up to the Planet Express crew to save the day and pay a loving tribute to deceased D&D creator Gary Gygax. The special features pale in comparison to the ones on The Beast with a Billion Backs. But, you get several fun spots that show off how developed the world of 3008 has become.

Get Smart
d. Peter Segal
c. Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin and Terence Stamp

Special Features

Play the movie straight through or in Comedy Optimization Mode, with Get Smart Takes (over 20 minutes of alternative jokes).

The Right Agent for the Right Job: Behind-the-Scenes Training

Max in Moscow! – On Location or on a Soundstage? Watch and Decide.

Language Lessons: Spotlight on Linguistics Master Steve Carell.

Spy Confidential: Gag Reels.

Spying on Get Smart’s Bruce & Lloyd Out of Control.

Recycling classic television for films is almost second nature for Hollywood. Peter Segal is a director whose name hasn’t inspired good feelings since Tommy Boy. But, Segal manages to find a happy medium between Carell’s antics and Hathaway’s casual cool. That’s not to ignore Dwayne Johnson’s natural charisma or Terence Stamp’s ability to fucking rule the Earth. The Blu-Ray has more special features, but it doesn’t matter. You don’t need to see a Vomit Reel in High-Def. Pick up the version that you want and then bury it in your collection.

Shrek the Halls
d. Gary Trousdale
c. Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas and Eddie “Meet Dave” Murphy

Special Features

“Twelve Days of Christmas” Sing Along

“Deck the Halls” Sing Along

Shrek Carnival Craze Video Game Demo and Cheat Code

DreamWorks Animation Video Jukebox

DreamWorks know where its money lies. Between the legs of a big green bitch that sounds like that chick from In Her Shoes. There are no main features or special features. It’s nothing more than an excellent digital copy of a Holiday special that you should’ve TIVO’d last year. Throw on some bullshit to sell Madgascar 2 and you’ve got this disc. It’s a shame that your damn kids are going to make you buy it.

Budd Boetticher is one of the unsung heroes of Hollywood in the 1950s. Falling somewhere between Anthony Mann and Samuel Fuller, Boetticher made films of quiet power. SONY has collected five titles in this collection for us to peruse this Tuesday. Joining forces with The Film Foundation, each print has been restored to utmost clarity.

The five films included in the set are some of the finest Randolph Scott Westerns ever. Everything from The Tall T to Comanche Station is collected here. We get brief interviews with Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood and Taylor Hackford as they introduce the films. I wish the same amount of forethought could’ve been put into the packaging. The screeners I received were so dinged up, that I wonder what’s going to happen to this set in a big-box retailer. One fall from a tall shelf and there goes five discs of Western goodness. Don’t overlook this set on Tuesday.
