Over the last couple of weeks, as The Incredible Hulk DVD was getting flogged, we heard that the Green Goliath would be the bad guy that brings the Avengers together. But IESB noted a sentence in the latest Avengers press release that seems to contradict that:

In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.

So it seems that the Hulk is part of the Avengers, right? Maybe, maybe not. Ignoring the possibility that this sentence is simply boilerplate explaining an as yet unwritten film, the Hulk could be both a good guy AND a bad guy in this film.

Comic nerds will recall that Avengers #1 saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes getting together to stop a rampaging Hulk (at the behest of the Hulk’s best friend, Rick Jones!), but it turned out that this was all part of a plot by the evil Norse god Loki. I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie did a very similar thing, with the film opening on a Hulk rampage and the heroes discovering another, larger foe was behind the whole thing. But who could it be?
