I have a couple of great regrets in my life: girls I let get away, opportunities I did not take. Now add to them the fact that I missed the teaser for Tron 2 (or TR2N as we are being asked to call it) at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Rarely does footage surprise everybody that fully – no one seemed to know it was coming. And apparently it was completely awesome. And so you see my regret.

Of course I imagine that I’ll have plenty of chances to see footage from TR2N in the coming months as production gets seriously underway; in the meantime Jim Hill Media has run an interesting look at the development of the project so far. That teaser was six months in the making, as commercial director Joseph Kosinski spent six months on it in an effort to sell skeptical Disney suits. The guardian angel on his shoulder was John Lasseter, who has shepherded the new movie this far – and out of the hands of original Tron director Steve Lisberger, who has spent the last half decade working on a sequel script. All of his concepts are now out the door and Lasseter and Kosinski are starting from scratch. Lisberger is getting an executive producer credit, but it’ll be interesting to see if he grouses to the press about the whole situation.
