Empire has the exclusive look at the international poster for Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and this one showcases the sultry side of our hero, and the endlessly sexy good looks of his lady, played by Selma Blair. And I like it! I like the American version as well – it’s stoic and classy – but there’s something about this pose that I really dig. I wonder if American audiences would be slightly turned off by seeing a babe rubbing up on a big monster, and thus the solo shot on that one.
I also like seeing the connection to Pan’s Labyrinth continuing to be played up. Hellboy II plays like Pan as a superhero movie – there is no doubt that this is a Guillermo del Toro movie, through and through. This film has some damn stiff competition, so any way that it can get differentiated from the rest of the summer movie pack is a good thing, and this is definitely a different kind of summer movie.
