No one will ever mistake Will Ferrell for Teddy Pendergrass, but he lets loose a little blue-eyed soul on “Love Me Sexy”, a promotional track for New Line’s upcoming Semi-Pro. Does this video effectively torpedo any hope for a halfway realistic ABA movie? Not really. That ship was already listing with the theatrical trailer, in which Ferrell engages in a steel-cage wrestling match with a grizzly bear. This film is gonna be nothing but silly. And that’s probably for the best, since professional basketball is insanely unpopular nowadays (although it’s nice to see all the “die hard” Boston Celtics fans turning up after all those years of Pierce-led futility).
Semi-Pro goes wide on February 29th. I’m seeing it in a couple of weeks, and I’m hoping this isn’t the comedy equivalent of Blue Chips.
