http://chud.com/nextraimages/knightleyatonementpic2.jpgThere is a sizable enough British contingent within the Academy to give pause as the BAFTAs honor Atonement with fourteen nominations (as opposed to the nine snared by No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood), but I fear it’s too late for this sudden flush of success to qualify as a significant momentum shift. I’m still amazed that this one-time frontrunner will likely walk away with, at most, a handful of Oscar nods next Tuesday. The best-case scenario right now seems to be Keira Knightley and Saoirse Ronan getting, respectively, Best Actress and Supporting Actress nominations.

So if Atonement‘s big BAFTA score means little to the Oscar race, that means the completely shut out Into the Wild can breathe a sigh of relief (though I seem to be in the minority in believing that it’s destined for a Best Picture nomination). I also noticed that 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was missing from the "Film Not in the English Language’ category, but it could be that its January 11th UK release placed it out of the running? Or maybe people are so turned off by the abortion subject matter that they’re just flat-out avoiding the movie? I’m askin’ ‘cuz I’m flummoxed.

I like that The Bourne Ultimatum is up for Best British Film. Not that it has a chance of winning; Atonement will easily win there (as I predict it will for Best Film). I’m a little shocked that the brilliant Sam Riley missed in the "Leading Actor" category, but the posthumous recognition for Ulrich Muhe is nice to see.  And good for American Gangster!

Here’s the full list of nominees. The BAFTAs will air February 10th at 6:00 PM EST/3:00 PM PST on BBC America.
