I’m on the record as saying that the original Hellboy is, in my opinion, one of the lesser Guillermo del Toro movies. Of course when your greater films are masterpieces like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone, even your lesser films are pretty fucking good. Now there’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and I must say that this sequel looks to have everything I was missing from the first movie: massive scope and tons of incredible monsters.
The stuff that you see in the new teaser trailer, which just debuted on MySpace, is just the tip of the iceberg on this epic film. And that’s a pretty kick ass tip, I have to say. I’ve seen a longer version of one of the fights in this trailer, and even without any finished FX it was incredible. Seeing the FX – even ones at this early stage – filling in the gaps was really impressive.
Oh, and that scene where Hellboy is laying in the water and his cigar is wet and he says, ‘Now you’ve pissed me off? I’m standing just camera left of that scene. This job is pretty fucking cool. And Hellboy II: The Golden Army promises to be just as cool.
