The pictures around Woody Allen’s next annual release has been forming for a while, with the most tantalizing info being the diverse cast including Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, and Peter Sarsgaard along with comedians Louis C.K. and Andrew Dice Clay. Will now we’re discovering there’s another new name, and it comes along with the film’s title and distributor.
The story? “The final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife.”
The title? Blue Jasmin.
The distributor? Sony Pictures Classic (for the 6th time).
The actor? Michael Stuhlbarg!
Along with Cannavale, Michael Stuhlbarg is an alumni of Boardwalk Empire, and of course led the amazing Coen Brothers film, A Serious Man. He also appeared in Lincoln, Seven Psychopaths, Men In Black III, and Hitchcock in smaller roles this year, so it’s been a booming time for the actor. That more than makes me happy, as I think he might be one of our best contemporary character actors. There’s no word on how large his role here is.
Allen still has some latent energy from his biggest hit in some time, Midnight In Paris, but things are tempered a bit considering last year’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it release. Will the director pick back up that momentum, or will it be another miss year? With that “crisis of a fashionable New York housewife” story, he’s clearly not moving outside of his wheelhouse, so I guess we’ll just have to see.
