It’s comforting knowing that Paul Schrader is still out there making films. Writer of Taxi Driver, director of American Gigalo; Schrader’s an independent and seasoned mind whose efforts often skew sexual. That’s no more evident than in this trailer for The Canyons, which Schrader directed from a Bret Easton Ellis script. The movie sees porn star James Deen costarring with Lindsay Lohan, who looks like she’s aged 10,000 years since Mean Girls.
I like the trailer for what it is. What I don’t like is a heavily-processed grindhouse sheen that screams “digital” and gives the film a really disingenuous look. This looks like the sexual depravity of an American Apparel catalog by way of Deathproof. Odd combination:
